LAUAN401-Study Task 2

History- How has animation shaped our perceptions of truth?

The quotes from the two texts 'The Googleization of Everything' and 'What is History' that I found the most useful and thought provoking were:

  • 'we now allow Google to determine what is important, relevant, and true on the Web and in the world.'- 'The Googleization of Everything.

  • 'When we seek to know the facts, the questions which we ask, and therefore the answers which we obtain, are prompted by our system of values.'- What is History.

  • 'The exploration seems to be endless, since all historical judgements involve persons and points of view, one is as good as another and there is no 'objective' historical truth'- What is History.

Why I find them thought provoking or useful:

  1. Finding out what the text means by values and what effect this has on perceptions of truth based on history. (from the first quote).
  2.  Do we trust websites on the internet to give us truthful facts or facts that have been changed throughout history?
  3. Environment
  4.  Do we depend on the internet to find our answers too much instead of looking in a history book in the library?
  5.  Is there a truth to any historical fact?

LAUAN401- Task 1

Cinderella and Dimensions of Dialogue

By Lotte Reiniger and Jan Svankmajer

similarities: Narrative genre, history and social theme, stop-motion.

Differences: techniques are different (paper cut outs and clay), sound effects (voice overs and sound effects), different narratives (different meanings).

From looking at the two different films 'Cinderella' and 'Dimensions of Dialogue' I have noticed many similarities and differences. The similarities from both of these films was that they both hold the genre of narrative however, the narrative in the films are shown very differently. For example, in Lotte Reiniger's 'Cinderella' the narrative is told by the use of voice overs while the stop-motion is playing. Whereas, in the 'Dimensions of Dialogue' by Jan Svankmajer, the narrative is told by the the movements of the clay models without any voice-overs in the background. They are also both filmed using the stop-motion technique however, the artists use different medias within the films which are:
clay and paper cut-outs.

Dimensions of Dialogue

The 'Dimensions of Dialogue' is shown using three parts within this animation and was created by the surrealist artist Jan Svankmajer in 1982. 'Eternal Conversation' is the first clay animation to be shown, closely followed by 'Passionate discourse' and then finished by  the 'Exhaustive Discussion'. The video I currently have displayed is a clip from Youtube and it is showing body forms made out of clay.

This clay animation tells the story of two clay models that flow and melt into each other symbolising them having sex, until they mould back into their normal human forms. A blob appears on the table as something created by these two clay models and starts being rejected by both the clay man and women. This results in, the two clay models tearing each other apart.

I chose this animation because:

  • When watching the video in the lesson the different reaction from each person made me curious as to why the reactions would be that way.
  • Looking at this short clip of Jan Svankmajer's work made me curious about looking deeper into his work and closely looking at what what people have quoted to be, 'deeply disturbing'.
  • How this material can be used within a animation and how clay can be manipulated.
  •  The clay animation allows you to decide what the 'clay blob' symbolises.
  • Looking into the deeper meanings within the animation and looking at how the clay is manipulated to convey how individuals can tear each other apart, emotionally, when they cannot handle the consequences of their actions.
