LAUAN401- (Part A)

Dimensions of Dialogue

The 'Dimensions of Dialogue' is shown using three parts within this animation and was created by the surrealist artist Jan Svankmajer in 1982. 'Eternal Conversation' is the first clay animation to be shown, closely followed by 'Passionate discourse' and then finished by  the 'Exhaustive Discussion'. The video I currently have displayed is a clip from Youtube and it is showing body forms made out of clay.

This clay animation tells the story of two clay models that flow and melt into each other symbolising them having sex, until they mould back into their normal human forms. A blob appears on the table as something created by these two clay models and starts being rejected by both the clay man and women. This results in, the two clay models tearing each other apart.

I chose this animation because:

  • When watching the video in the lesson the different reaction from each person made me curious as to why the reactions would be that way.
  • Looking at this short clip of Jan Svankmajer's work made me curious about looking deeper into his work and closely looking at what what people have quoted to be, 'deeply disturbing'.
  • How this material can be used within a animation and how clay can be manipulated.
  •  The clay animation allows you to decide what the 'clay blob' symbolises.
  • Looking into the deeper meanings within the animation and looking at how the clay is manipulated to convey how individuals can tear each other apart, emotionally, when they cannot handle the consequences of their actions.
